A Kid’s Life in Rwanda

In Rwanda it costs money to go to school so lots of kids can’t go even though they really want to. Many also have to work so the family can buy food. Not very many houses have water so you will see lots of kids walking to get water. Few people have televisions so they spend more time together playing and talking outside. But you know what? The kids are not that different from us. They love to laugh and play. They love music. They love to dance. And they really love sports – especially soccer! If you travelled to Rwanda, you would have a lot of fun playing with the kids there.

Rwanda is also called the Land of a Thousand Hills because there are so many hills. It’s a beautiful place.

Tag is a fun game for kids in America and kids in Africa!

This lady is walking home. Few people have cars so they walk a lot.

Not very many houses have water so the kids take these jugs to get water from rivers and water wells.

This lady is taking a bike taxi.

These are some of the houses in Kigali, Rwanda

Some of the dresses the ladies wear are so colorful and pretty. This woman is making jewelry by hand.

In the rural areas, most of the houses are very simple. They added patches of grass in the front of this one to make the front pretty.

Here they are passing out shoes to kids that don’t have any or don’t have good shoes.

Here we are helping to hand out some of the food for kids who don’t have a home. These are some of the kids you help when you purchase Tabbies.

Animals

In Rwanda there are pretty birds everywhere and their pretty sounds can be heard in the morning. You can also find monkeys up in the trees as you drive around in a car. You may even spot an antelope or hippo as you drive around the rural roads. There is a famous park in Rwanda where you can see rare mountain gorillas and there is another park with elephants, giraffes, zebras, hedgehogs, monkeys and other animals.

Their Language

While many people speak French or English, the main language in Rwanda is called Kinyarwanda. You can learn how to speak it too!

Play Time

The kids in Rwanda love to play and have fun. The girls like to jump rope. The boys love to play soccer. If they don’t have a soccer ball, they will make one out of plastic bags or plant leaves. And they’ll make up games with rocks, use scrap wood for building blocks, and they’ll play fun games with the caps off soda bottles.

Our Current Project

Christmas for Orphans

For each Tabbies dress sold, we give money to fund a project that will help kids in Rwanda. Our current project helps Rwandan families that may be very different from your family. People in Rwanda have suffered through some hard times including disease and some kids don’t have a mom or dad. So an older children in the family must step up and be a parent to their younger brothers and sisters.

To help these families, Tabbies is raising money to give the kids a special holiday celebration. By buying Tabbies clothes, you have helped these orphans in Rwanda to have a merry Christmas! Check back after Christmas and we’ll have some pictures to share!
